Tying the Pink Nightmare

1) Secure hook in the vice then whip mono thread onto the shank. Stop winding the tread at the point shown in the image. The line coming off the bobbin should almost touch the hook point but be careful! One little slip and the thread will break!
2) Tie in four hackles, two on each side splayed outward. Be sure hackles are straight and even so the fly will look more natural in the water and float upright.
3) Tie in six strands of Flash-A-Bou. Center the strands under the thread, wind thread twice then fold flash rearward. Wrap a few times with the thread. This will make sure flash does not pull out from the fly. Be sure flash is centered between the hackles. Add a drop of Zap-A-Gap and let the glue set.
4) Tie in another Grizzly hackle facing outward. Add another drop of glue to cement the feather to the hook shank. Let the glue set for a minute. While waiting, this is a good time to trim the foam you will need for this fly.
5) Palmer or wind the hackle forward. Make sure each wind is right next to the previous wind. With each turn, fold the hackle backwards. Once done, whip it with a few winds of the thread and add a little cement.
6) Take a razor blade and a straight edge. Measure off approximately a half inch at the top and bottom of the sheet of foam. Line up your straight edge with the marks and trim using the razor blade.
7) Center foam on the hook at the rear as shown, just on top of and ahead of the palmered hackle. Wind it a few times with the thread. Be sure to pull snug on the thread but not to hard or the thread may break.
8) Fold foam rearward and wind thread in front of folded foam. Wind a few times to form a small head. This will keep the foam from creeping forward during the rest of the tying sequence.
9) Tie in a grizzly hackle, inside of feather facing to the front. Be sure to tie the hackle in securely so it does not slip.
10) Tie in pink Estaz then wind the thread forward to the eye of the hook. Add a dab of cement to the tie in point of the hackle and estaz. Cement the entire hook shank. This will make the fly virtually indestructible.
11) Wind Estaz forward to the hook eye. Be sure to wind evenly and tightly as possible. With each wind, fold estaz back with your fingers just like you are palmering a hackle. This will give the body a much fuller apparence.
12) Palmer the hackle forward as shown. Be sure each wind is evenly spaced. Tie off at the hook eye and trim. Form a small head with the thread.
13) Fold down lower section of foam, this will form the bottom lip. Gently pull foam tight and fold end over the eye of the hook. Center the snug foam over the eye and gently make a small hole in the foam with your thumb nail. Poke eye through the foam. Wind the thread just behind the eye as shown a few times.
14) Fold over top layer of foam forward. Pull gently and wind the thread a few times around as shown. This will form the upper lip.
15) Pinch lips together and trim as shown with a sharp pair of scissors. Be sure to trim straight across and as evenly as possible.
16) Whip finish and add glue. Be sure to cement all the way around. Coat the thread winds entirely. Be sure to get underneath as well.
17) With sharp scissors or nail clippers, trim the corners of the lips as shown. This will keep the fly from spinning too much during the cast. Remove from vice, tie it to a tippet and cast at your nearest dock!
