                Frequently Asked Questions

                • What time of the year is the best time to book a trip?
There are always excellent fishing opportunities around the Charlotte Harbor area. Seasonal variations cause the fish to be located in different locations but they are always available.

                • Why do you use canoes instead of kayaks?
For various reasons. One of which that canoes are more fly fishing friendly, more comfortable, stable and lighter than most
Sit on top kayaks. You can read more into it by reading my articles about canoes on my Blog.

                • Are your canoes tippy?
Nope! Each is outfitted with the Spring Creek Stabilizer System. Even without the pontoons, they are pretty stable.

                • I have never paddled before. Is it difficult?
While there is a learning curve if you are a beginner, paddling our canoes is pretty easy, especially if you have done some paddling in the past. You will get all the instruction on how to properly paddle and use your paddle craft.

                • What will I need to bring?
See the "What to Bring" on this page.

                • Can we fish for a specific type of fish?
Yes. Express your goals and this is easy to do. Redfish, snook, trout, Baby Tarpon or whatever you desire, that will be the focus however you never know what we will catch. Many times my goal is to get you the highly coveted slam.

                • Can we go for big Tarpon? I see other paddle fishing guides offering it.
                A resounding NO!
I often get calls from potential clients looking to go hunting for BIG Tarpon out of a paddle craft.
I will not take the chance of sitting you in a 14" plastic "bobber", sticking you to a 100+ lb. fish in Shark infested water and hope that my insurance will cover the worst case scenario. This is not only dangerous for you (even though a few "Kayak Fishing Guides" in the area advertise they will do this. Caution to the wind) it is also guaranteed that the fish will not survive the fight, IF you can get it in one piece to the kayak and IF you can revive it properly which is nearly impossible in a paddle craft.
I want your trip to end with many great memories of the time you had and the fish you caught during your charter, not a helicopter ride to the nearest trama center. We can go for baby Tarpon which are a lot more fun on a fly rod but if the big girls are your goal. See our LINKS section with recommended Captains for such a trip.

                • Can you provide lodging?
Lodging suggestions are available. From resort-style locations for the whole family to basic "efficiency" style set-ups, the area has different options for different needs and budgets. We do have a preferred hotel that is near all of our launches.

                • Can I keep any fish that I catch?
Sorry, C.P.R. = Catch, Photograph and Release only.

                • What if the weather doesn't co-operate?
In the case of inclement weather the day of the trip, we will give you the option of selecting another day to do the trip or a refund. An enjoyable, safe experience is most important, so the decision to postpone or cancel will be made with those things in mind.

                • Will you fish as well?
It is my job as a guide to instruct, not to fish. The fishing and catching part is your job. The only time you will see me with a rod in my hand is to demonstrate casting technique or how to work a certain fly.
