Kayak post- ( it's gonna be long. But if you have a kayak or canoe I would just like you to read along and think a bit....
So here's a current SITREP of where we have come to in the "kayak world."
Canoes are not allowed in the biggest tournament entity in the country because, wait for it ....because they are freaking CANOES by name.
It's called KAYAK Bass Fishing ( or KBF ) for a reason!
Even though the Wilderness Systems Commander, Jackson Kayak Kilroy, Old Town Next, Native Ultimate, (and probably other hybrid "kayaks") that are basically canoes themselves -but called/marketed as kayaks.
That's A-OK! Just not welcome in your canoe that's actually called a canoe.
Now follow along and be prepared to call me crazy because I'm one of those nut jobs who still think kayak and canoe fishing is about using human power.
I know... I'm just not evolving with the sport. There has been much discussion about pedal powered kayaks but personally I am ok with that. I'm a die hard PADDLER and don't want mechanical drives to break maintain or buy- but at least it's still human powered.
So...keep up now... for several years, after Torqeedo ( electric motor manufacturer) ponied up $30k in prize money for KBF to give away and became the sugar daddy of the tour, electric MOTORS have been allowed. Ok, its 40 inches wide and you have to have a trailer and can't lift it off the ground without risking permanent herniation but it's a called a KAYAK by name.
That's A-OK. Bring it, and your entry money and you're a kayaker.
Now, another big entity, Riverbassin Tournament Trail, put on by Jackson Kayaks, which has created and owns a spin off company, Blue Sky BOAT Works is going to allow the new Blue Sky catamaran BOAT.
I know shocking isn't it. While you recover I will point out that unlike Kayak Bass Fishing, Riverbassin believes ( like me) that motors are not part of the competition, for now anyway. Torqeedo hasn't bought their way in yet. But they are A-OK with allowing what even Blue Sky says is NOT a kayak. But a BOAT. Though it can take a motor you just can't use it in the tourneys. Pedal only.
The Pro-Staffs, the arguments, the 14 different ways people have been caught cheating, the egos, and more are all signs that the cure is becoming the disease. And has been for quite a while.
This is not an attempt on my part to try and convince you that the once simple, affordable, grassroots world of human powered fishing that spawned it all has gone crazy and been diluted and polluted by competition, commercialism, marketing and keeping up with the Joneses.
Just the opposite.
I'm not trying to convince anyone.
Everybody knows it's not driven by the roots, the community, or the ethos that made all this possible- it's all decided by money.
I don't care if you are on that train until the last stop.
I'm just telling you why I got off a good while ago.
I know where I belong.
I know where it came from and that's what it will always be to me. It's understandable if you don't see it like I do. That's perfectly fine and you might as well evolve yourself right away from reading what I do or how I feel about it.
Now if you will pardon me I have to get in bed so I can get up at 4:30 and fish.
